Tips to Safely Transporting Horses

When it comes to transporting a horse to a venue, there is no such thing as too much care being taken. Horses are very sensitive animals and it is important that when moving them in vehicles that due consideration is given to their comfort and safety. Remember that while most humans have no qualms about being cooped up in a vehicle for several hours, the same rule may not apply as easily to an equine animal. One of the most important issues to consider when transporting horses is the space. Providing a horse with spacious accommodation is the preference. With appropriate safety ties including chest cars, tie rings and butt bars, you can secure the animal while leaving them enough space to move about in comfort. This allows it to maintain balance while the vehicle is in motion and also move its head about to cough out contaminants breathed in during the road travel.

Another consideration one should give is to the positioning of the horse while in transit. Slant load is preferred by some because it allows for more animals to be packed in but this diagonal positioning is not a good idea for prolonged journeys. It is however fine if the journey to the venue is short. For longer distances, it is a good idea for the horse owner to invest in larger accommodation that allows for straight load. Besides ensuring the comfort and safety of the horse, you should also give some thought to that of the people accompanying the horse. There are new trailers that have become increasingly popular as they are designed very much like motorhomes that combine horse and human transportation in luxury. This kind of accommodation is great for ensuring that participants like the rider can get adequate rest before the event and cuts on the cost of paying for further accommodation along the way and back from the venue.
